Sober living house South Africa – A structured environment for recovery and independent living
Recovery does not end when residential addiction treatment ends.
For many people, the transition back to everyday life can be one of the most challenging stages of recovery. The structure of treatment changes, responsibilities increase and the individual has to begin applying their recovery skills in the real world.
Our Sober Living House in South Africa provides a structured, supportive environment for people who want to continue building their recovery while gradually developing greater independence.
The Sober Living House is a separate residential facility operating under the wider care and recovery structure of South Coast Recovery Centre.
Residents do not have to have completed treatment at South Coast Recovery Centre to be considered for admission. People who have completed treatment elsewhere, or who are already established in recovery and require a structured sober-living environment, may also be considered, subject to our screening and admission requirements.
A safe environment.
Greater independence.
Continued accountability.
A stronger foundation for recovery.

What Is a Sober Living House?
A sober living house provides a structured living environment for people who are committed to maintaining their sobriety while rebuilding their lives.
It sits between the highly structured environment of residential treatment and the greater independence of everyday life.
However, sober living is not simply accommodation.
The purpose is to provide an environment where residents can practise the skills required for long-term recovery while taking increasing responsibility for their choices, routines and future.
This can include developing healthy daily routines, maintaining accountability, rebuilding relationships, returning to work or education and learning how to manage everyday challenges without returning to alcohol or drugs.
For people coming from residential treatment, sober living can provide an important additional stage of recovery. For people coming from another treatment provider or recovery pathway, it can provide a structured environment in which to continue their progress.
A Separate Sober Living Facility Under SCRC
Our Sober Living House South Africa is a separate facility from the primary South Coast Recovery Centre residential treatment centre.
This separation is important.
The environment provides residents with greater independence and a lifestyle that is closer to ordinary living, while still remaining connected to the wider SCRC addiction recovery structure.
South Coast Recovery Centre’s broader phased approach to recovery recognises that people can require different levels of structure at different stages of their recovery journey.

The progression can be understood as:
Primary Treatment → Transitional Recovery → Structured Sober Living → Greater Independence
Not everyone will follow exactly the same pathway. The appropriate level of care depends on the individual’s circumstances, treatment needs, progress and readiness.

Who Can Apply for Sober Living?
The SCRC Sober Living House is open to suitable applicants who are committed to living in a sober and structured environment.
Residents may come from:
- South Coast Recovery Centre
- Another rehabilitation or addiction treatment centre
- Another recognised recovery programme
- An established period of independent recovery where additional structure is appropriate
Previous treatment at SCRC is not a requirement for consideration.
What matters is whether the person is suitable for the environment and able to comply with the expectations of sober living.
Potential residents may be looking for additional support after rehabilitation, a safe environment while returning to work or education, greater accountability during early recovery, or a gradual transition towards independent living.
Admission and Screening
Maintaining a safe and genuinely sober environment is central to the SCRC Sober Living House.
For this reason, all prospective residents are screened before admission.
Admission is subject to an assessment of suitability, and a negative drug and alcohol test is required on admission.
The screening process helps determine whether the individual is appropriate for a shared sober-living environment and whether the house is an appropriate level of support for their current circumstances.
This protects both the individual seeking accommodation and the recovery environment for everyone already living in the house.
If you would like to discuss whether sober living is appropriate for you or a family member, our rehab admissions team can discuss the process confidentially.

A Comfortable Place to Rebuild
Recovery requires structure, but the environment also matters.
Our Sober Living House provides a comfortable residential setting where residents can begin experiencing greater independence while remaining within a recovery-focused environment.
The facility includes comfortable bedrooms, spacious communal areas, a fully equipped kitchen, dining facilities, outdoor living areas, gardens and a swimming pool.
The objective is to create a place that feels like a home rather than an institution.
Because ultimately, recovery is about learning how to live.
Comfortable Bedrooms
Residents have their own comfortable living space within a shared residential environment.
A calm and welcoming environment can make the transition into sober living easier while residents establish new routines and responsibilities.
Shared Living Areas
The communal areas provide opportunities for residents to relax, socialise and experience everyday life alongside others who are also committed to recovery.
Kitchen and Dining
Daily living involves responsibility.
Preparing food, maintaining routines, sharing communal spaces and taking responsibility for the home are all part of learning to live independently.
Outdoor Space
The gardens, deck and swimming pool provide residents with space to relax and enjoy a healthy lifestyle in a peaceful environment.

Structure Without Removing Independence
One of the most important aspects of effective sober living is finding the balance between freedom and accountability.
Residents have greater independence than they would experience in primary residential treatment.
At the same time, sober living comes with expectations.
Residents are expected to take responsibility for their behaviour, their recovery, their commitments and their contribution to the household.
The purpose of structure is not to control every aspect of a person’s life.
It is to help them develop the ability to manage their life responsibly.
As independence increases, accountability remains important.
Building the Skills for Independent Living
Recovery is not only about stopping alcohol or drug use.
It is also about learning how to live differently.
Sober living provides an opportunity to practise everyday skills such as:
- Maintaining healthy routines
- Managing personal responsibilities
- Managing time
- Developing accountability
- Handling stress
- Managing emotions
- Rebuilding relationships
- Returning to work or education
- Managing money responsibly
- Identifying triggers
- Applying relapse-prevention strategies
- Making healthier decisions
- Developing confidence and independence
These are the practical skills that can help turn recovery principles into everyday behaviour.
Our Relapse Prevention resources provide further information about maintaining recovery beyond primary treatment.

Continuing Recovery After Rehabilitation
Completing a rehabilitation programme is an important milestone, but it does not necessarily mean that every recovery skill has been fully established.
For some people, additional structure can provide valuable time to practise those skills.
At South Coast Recovery Centre, our approach recognises that recovery can develop progressively rather than being treated as something that starts and finishes on a particular date.
Our 21-Day Addiction Treatment Programme can provide an intensive starting point for appropriate individuals, while some people may benefit from longer-term residential treatment and a phased progression towards greater independence.
Sober living represents another possible stage in that journey.
Recovery in Nature
Recovery is not only about therapy and structure. It is also about learning to enjoy life again.
The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal provides a natural environment that encourages people to slow down, get outside and reconnect with themselves.
Surrounded by coastline, beaches, forests, rolling hills and open spaces, residents have opportunities to spend time in nature, exercise, walk, hike and experience the simple pleasures of everyday life without alcohol or drugs.
The area offers beautiful beaches, coastal walks, nature trails and scenic hiking routes, providing the perfect setting for developing healthy routines and discovering new ways to spend your time.
There is something powerful about starting the next chapter of recovery somewhere surrounded by nature.
A morning walk along the beach.
A hike through the coastal landscape.
Time outdoors with other people in recovery.
Swimming, exercise and fresh air.
Sometimes recovery is about learning to appreciate these simple things again.
