Safe, Structured Medical Support During Recovery
At South Coast Recovery Centre, we take a medically responsible and evidence-based approach to psychiatric medication management within addiction treatment. We understand that for many individuals, psychiatric medication is a vital part of maintaining mental stability and supporting recovery from substance use disorders.
Unlike some treatment centres that advocate for stopping psychiatric medication on admission, we prioritise continuity of care, clinical safety, and psychiatric stability from day one.
Our Approach to Psychiatric Medication
We do not discontinue prescribed psychiatric medication on admission.
All medication that a client arrives with is:
- Continued as prescribed
- Reviewed where clinically appropriate
- Administered through our medical clinic
- Supervised by qualified nursing staff
This ensures that clients remain medically stable while engaging in intensive therapeutic work.
Any adjustments to medication are only made in consultation with qualified medical professionals and are based on clinical need, not routine protocol.
Why Medication Continuity Matters
Abrupt changes to psychiatric medication can create unnecessary risk during early recovery, including:
- Emotional and psychological destabilisation
- Withdrawal effects
- Increased anxiety or mood instability
- Interference with therapeutic engagement
For this reason, we prioritise stability before adjustment, allowing clients to focus on recovery without unnecessary disruption to their mental health baseline.
Integrated Dual Diagnosis Care
Psychiatric medication management is not treated in isolation. It forms part of a broader dual diagnosis treatment model that addresses both addiction and underlying mental health conditions simultaneously.
Our integrated approach includes:
- Psychiatric assessment and oversight
- Individual psychotherapy
- Group therapy and psychoeducation
- Trauma-informed care
- Holistic recovery support activities (mindfulness, fitness, emotional regulation tools)
This ensures that both the biological and psychological aspects of recovery are addressed together.
Clinical Oversight and Safety
All psychiatric medication is managed within a structured medical environment. Our clinical team works closely with psychiatrists and external healthcare providers where necessary to ensure coordinated care.
Medication is administered through our medical clinic under strict supervision, ensuring:
Ongoing clinical review
Accurate dosing
Safe administration
Monitoring of response and side effects
Comprehensive Prescribed Medication Management
Our medication management approach is not limited to psychiatric medication alone. We also ensure the safe continuation and administration of all prescribed medications for existing medical conditions and general health needs during a client’s stay.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Medication for hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes management medication (insulin and oral medication)
- Asthma and respiratory treatments (inhalers, preventative medication)
- Thyroid medication
- Pain management prescriptions
- Antibiotics and short-term medical treatments
- Seasonal or acute illnesses such as influenza (flu), infections, or allergies
All prescribed medication is administered through our medical clinic under nursing supervision and in accordance with the prescribing doctor’s instructions.
Where necessary, any medical concerns are assessed and managed in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care and client safety throughout treatment.
Our Philosophy
We believe that recovery should never come at the expense of psychiatric stability. Medication, when appropriately prescribed and monitored, can play an essential role in creating the foundation needed for meaningful psychological and behavioural change.
Our goal is not to replace medical treatment, but to integrate it into a comprehensive recovery process that supports long-term wellbeing.
Speak to Our Admissions Team
If you would like to learn more about how we manage psychiatric medication during treatment, our admissions team is available to provide guidance and answer any questions.
Early clarity helps ensure the right clinical pathway from the start of treatment.
Clinical guidance from the National Health Service (NHS) emphasises that stopping psychiatric medication suddenly can lead to withdrawal effects and relapse of symptoms. This reinforces the importance of medically supervised continuation and review during treatment.
